In a work of Sir Walter Scott, The Pirate, I come across a term which is defined:
“Lispund, the fifteenth part of a barrel, a weight in Orkney and Shetland.” Of course, this is in the context of rum, which would suggest volume, not weight. The weight, after the consumption of one Lipsund, might be attributed to the head of the drinker. Nevertheless, the only holdout to a sane understanding of weights and measures is the 'English system' but it has come a long way, baby . . .
I said 'holdout'! - Vive le metric! - 1 times 10 equals 100, times ten equals 1000 - - - etc. and for measures you have kilos and meters and liters in the main, and need only to remember the endearing grams, and milligrams and nano grams etc. . . .
